Madhya Pradesh, often referred to as the “Heart of India,” is rapidly gaining recognition as a prime destination for filmmaking. Its diverse landscape offers a stunning backdrop for various cinematic ventures, from historical epics to contemporary stories. The state boasts a rich cultural heritage, with iconic locations like Khajuraho, Orchha, and Bhopal providing filmmakers with an array of unique settings. Additionally, the government’s supportive policies, well-maintained infrastructure, and local talent pool make it increasingly attractive to the film industry.
Madhya Pradesh Tourism made a remarkable appearance at the India International Film Tourism Conclave 2023, held in Mumbai from the 12th to 14th October 2023. The event was a platform for India’s vibrant film industry professionals to interact with industry stakeholders and explore the incredible cinematic potential of the country.
The tourism delegation, headed by the Principal Secretary Tourism and Culture Department and Managing Director, MP Tourism Board Mr. Sheo Shekhar Shukla (IAS) seized the opportunity to highlight MP’s breath-taking natural beauty, historical sites, and diverse cultural heritage to the film fraternity stakeholders. Madhya Pradesh, boasts a unique and diverse range of backdrops and landscapes that can seamlessly blend into a wide array of film genres. Officials from Madhya Pradesh Tourism met renowned  film fraternity stakeholders like R. Balki (Indian filmmaker and screenwriter) including many others and provided them an opportunity to explore the state’s untapped potential as a filming destination, underlining its suitability for various genres, including historical epics, romantic escapades, action-packed adventures, and mystical tales.
Mr. Shukla (IAS) shared the highlights of the film policy of Madhya Pradesh including grants to filmmakers, grant of permission within 15 days under Public Service Guarantee Act, online single window system for shooting permissions within the natural beauty and impeccable locations of Madhya Pradesh with the ambition to encourage private investment, skill development and employment generation through film shooting in the state. He also informed the stakeholders about financial grant for shooting of serial/show/web series/show/documentary, and special financial incentives for international filmmakers and South Indian filmmakers.
Recognizing the profound influence of films, the Madhya Pradesh government embarked on a groundbreaking journey by implementing the Madhya Pradesh Film Tourism Policy in March 2020. This policy established a Film Facilitation Cell (FFC) under the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, acting as the epicenter for all film-related activities in the state. The FFC streamlines shooting permissions, and location fees for government sites, develops film infrastructure, provides training for students, hosts talent workshops, and incubation centers, and offers lucrative incentives.
The state’s dense forests, rolling hills, serene lakes, majestic forts, and ancient temples have already served as exquisite backdrops for numerous Bollywood and international film productions. Madhya Pradesh Tourism officials provided an extensive list of stunning locations that filmmakers can utilize to create unforgettable cinematic experiences. The officials of Madhya Pradesh Tourism engaged with numerous filmmakers, location scouts, production houses, and industry experts, sparking exciting discussions about potential collaborations and film projects in the state.
Deputy Director, Films (MP Tourism) Mr. Yuvraj Padole quoted ‘Madhya Pradesh Tourism is excited about the possibilities that this event has opened up for the state. The Film Facilitation Cell (FFC) is committed to supporting the film fraternity in every way possible, from simplifying permits and permissions to facilitating access to their diverse and picturesque locations. The presence of Madhya Pradesh Tourism at the India International Film Tourism Conclave 2023 was a success, and it is expected to result in a surge of interest from filmmakers and production houses in leveraging the state’s unparalleled beauty for future film projects.’
Talking to this magazine on the sidelines of India International Film Tourism Conclave 2023,  Mr  Shukla said “Madhya Pradesh is emerging as a very important destination for film producers. The state’s low production costs, favorable weather conditions, central location, and the efficiency of quick permissions contribute to its allure as a coveted film destination.
He said  ” It’s not just the natural beauty that makes MP a filmmaker’s dream; it’s the proactive steps taken by the government to sweeten the deal. Over the past four years, MP has witnessed a surge in film projects, even during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2022 Film Tourism Policy has played a pivotal role in this success story.
Mr Shukla said “What sets MP apart from other states is its unique positioning as the heart of the country. The state’s excellent connectivity, with most trains and roadways traversing through it, makes it an accessible location. Moreover, MP is a year-round destination. Unlike hilly regions with extreme weather conditions, MP offers shoot-friendly weather throughout the year, including hill stations for a respite from the scorching heat. The state is known for its peace, stability, and a proactive government that welcomes investments, setting it apart from its counterparts. The streamlined, faceless administration process for seeking permissions makes it hassle-free and user-friendly for filmmakers. Furthermore, financial incentives are provided for those who choose MP for their film, web series, or documentary projects.
He said , The impact of MP’s film tourism initiative is not confined to the entertainment industry alone. Madhya Pradesh’s tourism has not only rebounded to pre-COVID levels but has exceeded all previous records. Tourists with disposable income are flocking to the state in large numbers, relishing the beauty and serenity that MP has to offer.
Madhya Pradesh is a treasure trove of unexplored locations, boasting UNESCO and historic sites, rural charm, dense forests, mountains, and water bodies. Over 200 film projects, including feature films, TV series, web series, documentaries, music albums, and TV commercials, have been shot in the state. Yet, despite this continuous global interest, countless hidden gems in MP remain unseen by the world.
